If you’re attending a Dallas Cowboys game, a concert, or college football game at the new Cowboys Stadium, how much should you expect to spend at stadium concession stands? These prices do not include items in the suites or private club areas. These samplings are from various concessions stands throughout the various levels and party platforms.

Because you are not allowed to bring your own food and drink into the stadium, be prepared to pay the following prices if you decide to purchase food/drink from concessions.

Drinks: bottle of water $5; bottle of soft drink $5; soft drink in a souvenir cup $6; beer (Miller Lite, Coors, Bud, MGD) $8; Cowboyrita (margarita) $14

Food items: Cowboys cheese steak (very popular!) $10; chopped BBQ beef sandwich $8.50; chicken breast sandwich $8.50; pulled pork sandwich $8.50; Angus hamburger or cheeseburger $8.50; Nathan’s hot dog/chili dog $5.50; chicken fried chicken sandwich $8.50; chicken tenders $8.50; Ultimate Nachos $8.50.

Snacks: French fries of chili cheese fries $5; soft pretzel $4; popcorn $5.50; peanuts $5; ice cream bar $5.50; cotton candy $5.50; potato chips (Lay’s, Baked Lay’s, Doritos) $3.

Farmer’s Market fruits: red grapes or green grapes $3 per bag; dried cranberries or dried banana chips $3 per bag; apples, oranges or pears (2 pieces of fruit) for $3.

ABlog Splitsville exterior

This isn’t your father’s bowling alley. I’m betting your dad’s bowling alley didn’t serve sushi, lump crab, or goat cheese al forno. This isn’t just a bowling alley, period. Splitsville is a cool, upscale, hip-yet-retro restaurant that happens to have something fun going for it: bowling, dancing and billiards.

I love Splitsville’s slogan: “America’s Original Bowling Parlor, where stale nachos, tacky carpeting and retro shoes are a thing of the past”. They’re not kidding. “Out” are the stale nachos; “in” is the Tuna Tataki or the Crunchy Ahi Poke.

And while families are welcome before 8pm, this is not a place for kids in the evenings. Splitsville allows only patrons 21 and older after 8pm, seven days a week. Prior to 8pm, patrons under 17 years of age must be accompanied by an adult.

Splitsville features 13 bowling lanes. The lanes are in the middle of the restaurant, so lots of people can see you roll a strike (or a gutter ball). There are four bars, plasma TVs, and a gourmet menu. There’s also a patio. Come for the “Party on the Patio” on Thursday night with a live band from 6-9pm. On Monday thru Thursday, the Patio features Buckets of Beer for $10 (domestic) from 4 to 11pm.

There’s a special “2 for 2 Tuesdays” featuring $2 bowling and $2 shoe rentals. On Mondays thru Fridays from 4-7pm, there are $5 sushi roll specials (chef’s choice) and ½ off specialty martinis. From 9-11pm on Monday thru Friday, there are specials for $5 pizzas (chef’s choice) and sushi rolls (chef’s choice).

Splitsville also hosts private parties, whether it’s a birthday party, office team-building, corporate events, or charity fundraisers. Go on-line or call 817 465 2695 to talk to the restaurants social directors about planning private party packages and reserving lanes and a party room.

Here are examples of menu items & prices.

Appetizers: three-pepper calamari ($9); asparagus manchego ($8); parmesan chicken breast tenders ($8); spicy edamame ($5); mahi mahi fish tacos ($8); thai shrimp quesadilla ($9); chicken Caesar quesadilla ($9); Shanghai shrimp ($9); tuna tataki ($10).

Sliders: Cuban reuben ($8); turkey clubettes ($8); buffalo chicken ($8); cheeseburger ($8); black ‘n bleu jerk chicken ($8); breakfast all day sausage & eggs ($8).

Super Sliders: tuna steak ($12); BBQ salmon ($12); Cajun scallop & lump crab ($12); filet mignon ($13).

Sushi: California roll ($8); spicy tuna ($8); crab Rangoon ($10); fire king ($10); volcano roll ($10); cucumber kani su ($11); tiger roll ($11); Hawaiian roll ($11).

Pizza: cheese ($9); Margherita ($11); pepperoni ($11); BBQ chicken ($11); Meat Lovers ($11); veggie ($11); cheeseburger ($11); build-your own ($12).

Signature Plates: Steak Chimichurri ($15); Prime Rib ($19); Sapphire Filet w/bleu cheese ($19); Filet Mignon ($19); Steak Oscar ($18); Mahi Fish-n-Chips ($13); Salmon ($15); Jerk Chicken fajitas ($15); Mahi Mahi w/Voodoo Shrimp ($16); Steak Fajitas ($15)

Pierre’s Mardi Gras Café
2816 S. Cooper St
Hours: Tues-Thurs 11:30-7:30; Fri-Sat 11:30-8:30; Sun 12-4; Closed Mondays
(817) 557-9990

For a taste of real New Orleans home cooking, go to Pierre’s Mardi Gras Café on South Cooper Street at the intersection with California Lane.

Roosevelt and Wendy Pierre moved to North Texas after Hurricane Katrina. They owned a catering business in addition to jobs as an accountant (Roosevelt) and postal worker (Wendy). Lucky for Arlington they decided to stay here and open this café.

If you’re hungry, go for a Plate Dinner, either the BBQ Shrimp with potato salad & dirty rice ($8.50) or the Catfish Mardi Gras (grilled or fried catfish in etoufee sauce; $9.50). Other plate dinners include Red Beans & Rice with smothered pork chops ($7.50), and Chicken Drumettes and Jambalaya ($7.99).

Seafood platter (Catfish; Oyster; Shrimp) include fries or onion rings and a side salad ($9.99 or $12.50 for combo).

The fried seafood is delicious…and I love the Catfish Mardi Gras…but the PoBoys are probably the most popular menu items.

The café serves original New Orleans PoBoys. The shrimp or oysters are breaded in cornmeal and the french bread is toasted inside & outside. If you order a PoBoy, might as order it ‘Dressed’ (Cajun-speak for everything on it).

Selection for Po Boys ($5.99 to $6.50 for 6”, $7.50 to $10 for 12”) include: BBQ shrimp, shrimp, oyster, ½ shrimp ½ oyster, Roast Beef, Ham, Hot Sausage, Hamburger, Philly Steak, and Philly Steak Surf & Turf (steak & shrimp).

You can get side dishes of jambalaya ($3.50, $5.99) and Dirty Rice ($2.50). And don’t forget about the gumbo. They call it Pierre’s Famous Seafood Gumbo. I just call to order a large for pickup so I can take it home and eat it the rest of the week. A large is $9, but you can get a cup for $3.99.

There are only two choices for Kids Meals: chicken tenders, plain burger ($4.50, fries and small drink included).

I suggest you pace yourself, because if you like dessert you may want to save room for bread pudding (only $2.75). They also have homemade pralines ($1.25). The weekly dessert special is usually a cake.

This is a small, casual restaurant. You order at the counter. There are only about 9 tables in the whole place. It’s in a strip shopping center. Believe me, it’s nothing fancy. But who cares when the food tastes this good?!?

And the Pierre family still caters, so give them a call if you’re thinking about catering an upcoming special event. Their number is 817-557-9990.

Alley Cats is one of the most fun places in all of Arlington. Whether you choose bowling, laser tag, rock climbing, arcade games, billiards, or just hanging out and maybe singing karaoke, then you’ll like Alley Cats. It’s next to the Putt-Putt place.

Alley Cats isn’t just for little kids. They offer parties for adults. a billiards room, Ladies Night, College Night, and special pricing for groups of all ages. It’s open until 2am on Friday and Saturday nights, until midnight Sundays through Thursdays.

You can get a good value by coming with a group of friends/family and taking advantage of money-saving packages. Here are some of the values:

* “Pizza Bowl” is a discount for a group of up to 5 people. The special is Monday thru Friday until 5pm ($59.99 for group), or Sunday thru Thursday evenings from 5pm to close ($69.99 for group). That’s about $14 per person, a good deal. Here’s what is included: 2 hours of open bowling for up to 5 people, rental shoes, $3 game card per person, a large pizza and pitcher of soda.

* “Morning Madness” is everyday (except Saturday) from 9am to 1pm. For $14.99 per person, you get unlimited bowling, rental shoes, $10 Game Card, 1 hot dog, 1 soft drink, and the option to add unlimited Laser Tag or Putt-Putt Golf for an extra $5.99.

Alley Cats specializes in group parties, youth and adult. For more info and pricing, click here: http://www.alleycatsbowl.com/group.php. Yes, there are Birthday Party packages, too. With 4 party rooms, they’re usually able to accommodate most requests.

And here’s a great idea for a youth group or youth sports-league team (pardon me while I flash back to my church youth group)….a LOCK-IN! Pricing is based on a minimum of 150 students and there must be a 1:20 ratio of chaperones. The cost is anywhere from $23 per person for 3 hours, up to $35 per person for 6 hours. Call Alley Cats or go to the Web site for more information.

The Web site includes a virtual tour and lots of video to go with animation. I advise checking the site for updates on specials/hours/group events.

As for Alley Cats’ location, the street address is 2008 W. Pleasant Ridge Road which is two blocks west of the S. Cooper Street/W. Pleasant Ridge intersection.

W. Pleasant Ridge Road is just a block north of I-20; in fact, it runs parallel to I-20. So go to Cooper Street, one block north of I-20 (in front of The Parks mall), then go two blocks west on W. Pleasant Ridge Road. The Parks Mall will be on the east side of S. Cooper Street/W. Pleasant Ridge intersection. Here’s the Mapquest for Alley Cats: http://www.mapquest.com/maps?city=Arlington&state=TX&address=2008+W+Pleasant+Ridge

The Spaghetti Warehouse
1255 W. I-20 (one block east of S. Cooper, next to The Parks Mall)
Hours: Thurs-Sun 11am-10pm; Fri & Sat 11am-11pm
(817) 557-0321
www.meatballs.com

For those of us with kids who are looking for good value when dining out, Spaghetti Warehouse’s $3.95 Kids Menu is still among the best deals in town. It’s a 3-course meal with an appetizer (soup, salad or applesauce), an entrée, and a little cup of ice cream for dessert. The entree choices are varied and include: spaghetti (meat sauce, tomato sauce or marinara), spaghetti & meatball, cheese pizza (extra for pepperoni, sausage or mushroom), mozzarella cheese sticks, mac & cheese, meat or cheese ravioli, or chicken strips.

And while we’re on the subject of family dining, the décor at Spaghetti Warehouse is so much fun (as a kid, I remember wanted to sit in the train dining car!).

As for the adults, the entrée items are more expensive (spaghetti entrees starting at $7.79), but the portions are substantial and two adults can split a order of pasta. Also, all entrees come with your choice of ‘bottomless fresh salad’ or bottomless soup. The most expensive item on the menu is the Turin Trio ($15.49), a combination of lasagna, chicken parmigiana, and fettucine alfredo. If you want more than pasta, there’s the Trolley Stop ($14.19) with a sirloin stop and spaghetti & meat sauce as well as several chicken dishes including Chicken Tetrazzini, chicken alfredo, chicken parmigiana, etc.

If you prefer the seafood entrees, the shrimp scampi and tilapia are both crusted with crab-crumbs. There’s also an appetizer portion of crab-crusted shrimp scampi ($8.49).

The best bet for appetizers (for those of us who can’t make up our minds) is the Sicilian Sampler ($8.99) in which you choose three from: toasted ravioli, Mozzarella Fritta (triangle wedges or fried cheese), fried zucchini, calamari, or bruschetta.

I know that it’s not for everyone, but I’ve always liked Spaghetti Warehouse’s Beer Chili ($4.39 per bowl) and, several times over the past few years, have ordered the Spaghetti with Beer Chili ($8.29) instead of the traditional meat sauce. It’s just a way to change things up a little bit. Go ahead and add the cheese and/or onions if you go with the chili.

And I know that most people, if they get soup at an Italian restaurant, usually order minestrone, but among the soups, give the Italian Wedding Soup a try.

Lunch specials are weekdays only, Monday thru Friday until 3pm. Yes, the pasta entrees on the lunch menu include the bottomless salad or soup as well as the sourdough bread.

As for desserts, our waitress said that the 12-layer chocolate cake ($6.29) was a best-seller, but you should really try to Tiramisu ($4.59). We’re in an Italian restaurant, after all! Like the entrees, the dessert portions are generous, so there’s plenty to share.

In addition to selections of beer and wine, these guys have their own recipe for Sangria! A glass of Warehouse Sangria is normally priced at $4.50 ($16.50 for a pitcher), but often there are drink specials in which you can get it for $1.99.

For groups, there are banquet rooms for special occasions. Also, Spaghetti Warehouse caters. So if you’re planning a special event or party in Arlington, you can either use a banquet room or order a buffet meal (buffet delivery or full-service catering) by calling (817) 467-3200. For more info, go to www.meatballs.com.
